Tate & Lyle - Increased ethanol production by conversion of corn fibres

The Joint Development Agreement included the development of a process for conversion of residual corn fibres into bioethanol and other valuable co-products. The process concept is based on BioGasol’s proprietary process technologies such as pretreatment and C5 sugar fermentation technologies. Currently the residual products from Tate & Lyles biorefineries are used as fodder. Tate & Lyle produces among others sugar, sweeteners, ethanol and starch out of renewable crops (maize, wheat and sugar cane) in the US for food, beverage and industrial customers. Based on new technology breakthroughs BioGasol has successfully developed a cost effective process for conversion of residual corn fibres from Tate & Lyle’s wheat based biorefinery plants



Optimisations of pretreatment conditions for various feedstocks based on Design of Experiments (DOE) methods have been carried out at laboratory (batch) and pilot scale (continuous), up to 1 t/h throughput for more than 15 customers since 2010 with excellent results. Biomasses tested include wheat straw (primary), corn stover, corn cob, empty fruit bunches, sugarcane bagasse, wheat bran, softwood and hardwood.

Successful development and demonstration of the pretreatment and C5 fermenting technologies at various scales, which after external evaluation has released 10.5 MEUR for support of an integrated process plant based on the BioGasol process concept.



Suprabio is a project financially supported by the 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission in which the task of BioGasol is to optimize pretreatment to facilitate utilization of lignocellulose for various end products. These end products include biofuels (e.g. ethanol, butanol, DME), platform chemicals (e.g. butyric acid, propionic acid, succinic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid) and value added chemicals (e.g. surfactants, emulsifiers, antioxidants, nano fibers and composites).
